Neuromuscular conditions

Neuromuscular conditions are rare, affecting just over one in every 1,000 people. There are many types of neuromuscular disorders, affecting people of all ages.

While most forms of neuromuscular conditions become evident in early childhood, some others appear in late adolescence or adulthood. Most neuromuscular conditions are a genetic disorder (inherited) and affect the nerves and, or muscles. Typically there is muscle wasting and weakness and is progressive. The most common neuromuscular condition is Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) which is characterized by a breakdown of muscle, resulting in loss of muscle strength.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is another common neuromuscular condition which is characterized by progressive loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord, resulting in muscle weakness and wasting.
